Course overview
This course is for adults who do not speak English as a first language. The programme’s communicative and inductive approach with life skills at its core gives learners the language skills they need to succeed in the real world.
The learning method supports learners to make the most of digital and print material. Our flexible approach combines language development with the crucial skills needed to be effective and adaptable for work, study and community engagement. By offering blended delivery teaching a number of classes both in person and via Zoom, we remove barriers to learning such as travelling time and costs. We will support you to develop your speaking and listening, reading and writing.
You will learn how to read basic forms, use a dictionary, read a letter from your surgery and any letters from your child’s school. You will be able to read basic health & safety and transport information; scan a range of texts to find information; proofread documents to check accuracy and engage in discussions about the content of the texts.

Entry Requirements
- Entry level 1: There are no formal entry requirements but you will complete an initial assessment with LIBS Training.
- Entry level 2: You will need to complete an English initial assessment with LIBS Training where you must score at working towards Entry level 2 or present evidence you have already achieved an Entry Level 1 qualification.
- Entry level 3: You will need to complete an English initial assessment with LIBS Training where you must score at working towards Entry level 3 or present evidence you have already achieved an Entry Level 2 qualification.
- Level 1: You will need to complete an English initial assessment with LIBS Training where you must score at working towards Level 1 or present evidence you have already achieved an Entry Level 3 qualification.
- Level 2: You will need to complete an English initial assessment with LIBS Training where you must score at working towards Level 2 or present evidence you have already achieved a Level 1 qualification.
Qualifications
- Recognised qualifications in English for speakers of other Languages (ESOL) Reading from Entry Level 1 to Level 2.
Progression
- Achieving this qualification at Level 2 should increase your confidence and motivation, and give you the skills you need to progress to Level 1 Writing or Speaking & Listening courses. You could also progress onto a lower level Functional Skills course on your path to obtain a GCSE equivalent qualification. Your tutor will discuss your next steps with you.

This course is for adults who do not speak English as a first language, who have little English writing skills. The programme’s communicative and inductive approach with life skills at its core gives learners the language skills they need to succeed in the real world.
The learning method supports learners to make the most of digital and print material. Our flexible approach combines language development with the crucial skills needed to be effective and adaptable for work, study and community engagement. By offering blended delivery teaching a number of classes both in person and via Zoom, we remove barriers to learning such as travelling time and costs.
You will learn how to write a simple sentence using correct grammar, use punctuation such as full stops, commas and questions marks correctly and upper and lower case letters correctly. Correctly spell common words and important words related to work and interests, fill out a form giving personal details; plan and draft a job application letter; correctly spell common words and important words related to work and interests, check your work and make any amendments as needed.

You will learn how to follow instructions, ask and answer questions and talk about everyday topics such as family, food, transport, health, entertainment and work. Pronounce everyday words properly, ask and answer simple questions about everyday topics. Talk about what you like and don’t like, speak to others in a group and respect others when they are speaking. Understand simple everyday instructions.
